Head to the Beach

Downtown Denison is celebrating tax-free weekend and the back to school holiday Saturday with a “Back to School Beach Party.” Businesses are staying open until 6 p.m. and will then move to join the concert at Heritage Park.

Special perks will be provided for educators as a ‘thank you.’ Giveaways will include cash and prizes; courtesy of Downtown Denison Inc. Everyone can sign up in the businesses, and school system personnel are encouraged to bring their ID’s in order to increase their chances of winning. Some businesses will offer 20 percent off for teachers. Look for pink flamingos and beach balls to signify participating businesses.

Those holding Downtown Denison shopping bags are encouraged to bring them and collect additional benefits. If you don’t have one of these black canvas bags created by artist Shelley Tate Garner, look for businesses that offer the bags with a purchase. An additional drawing will be held Saturday evening for these shoppers.

Individual businesses are working to create special activities this Saturday, too. Downtown business owner and newly published author James William Peercy will be at Box Seat Sportscards from 4-6 p.m. to sign copies of his new book “Without a Conscious…”. It is the first book in the Cliff Fulton Mystery series and the storyline can be found at www.JamesWilliamPeercy.com.
Saturday will kick off with the Farmers Market from 9 a.m.-noon at Chestnut and Burnett streets. The American Legion is having a garage sale/auction at 419 W. Crawford Street beginning at 8 a.m. They will have burgers and chips for lunch for $5 with an auction at 2 p.m.; and karaoke at 7 p.m.

Entertainment will begin at Heritage Park at 4 p.m. Downtown banker Bob Taylor is a member of the Jimmy Buffett tribute band “Fin City.” They will play from 5-7 p.m. Downtown Denison Inc. is planning giveaways and beach ball volleyball. Bring your lawn chair or beach blanket and dress cool and comfortably. Special cash and prize drawings will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Heritage Park.

Also Saturday Evening, The Rialto will feature “The Hunger Games” at 7 p.m., and Chance Cody and Spur 503 will be in concert at Smitty’s. You can meet the Denison High School Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m. at Munson Stadium while Randy Tredway and Friends will appear at Homestead Winery at 7 p.m.

Details and a list of participants will be listed on www.downtowndenison.com and Denison Main Street’s Facebook page. These sites will include a link to information on items that are tax-free. For more information, e-mail ddow@cityofdenison.com or call 903-464-4452.
